Our ladies are due to start kidding in the next week or so, which is always a fun time.
We’ve been keeping an eye on them and their bellies look and feel enormous and they are starting to ‘bag up’ which means their udders expand to start to produce colostrum which will give their kids a good start in life.
We are now watching carefully to see the other signs that the birth is imminent, typically they will paw and scratch their bedding up as if to make a nest, next comes the cute little ‘nawing’ noises they make. – They actually talk to their babies whilst still in the womb and once they are born they continue talking to them in the same fashion for at least 3-4 days.
We keep the kids with their Mums until they are at least 6 months old, when they either stay in our herd or move onto pastures new.
