Sensitive Skin (Cutaneous Hyperreactivity)

View all Terms

Sensitive skin describes a lower tolerance to everyday products, fragrances and environmental triggers — often showing up as tightness, redness, stinging or itching after washing. Discover how goat milk soap's gentle, naturally balanced formula can help support sensitive skin without stripping or irritating it further.

Sensitive skin isn't a single diagnosis — it's a description many people reach for when their skin reacts more readily than most to soaps, fragrances, weather, or fabric. It can appear on its own, or alongside conditions like eczema, psoriasis or rosacea, which is why it sits at the centre of so much of what we make.

What does "sensitive skin" actually mean?

Dermatologists sometimes call it cutaneous hyperreactivity: skin where the protective barrier is more easily disrupted, allowing irritants and allergens to penetrate more readily and trigger a reaction. Common signs include:

  • Redness or flushing after washing
  • A tight, dry or "stretched" feeling
  • Stinging or burning with certain products
  • Itching without an obvious cause
  • Reactions to fragrance, alcohol-based ingredients, or sulfates (like SLS)

Sensitive skin can be lifelong, or it can develop later — often linked to over-washing, harsh products, hormonal changes, or a weakened skin barrier from another condition.

Why mass-produced soap can make it worse

Most commercial soaps and body washes rely on foaming agents like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) to create lather. SLS is an effective cleanser, but it's also a well-documented irritant — it can strip the skin's natural oils and disrupt the barrier that keeps moisture in and irritants out. For already-reactive skin, this can turn a daily wash routine into a daily trigger.

Added fragrance is the other common culprit. Synthetic fragrance is one of the most frequent causes of contact reactions in sensitive skin, which is why an unscented option matters as much as what is in a product.

How goat milk soap helps support sensitive skin

We don't use SLS in any of our soaps. Instead, our bars are built around goat milk, which is naturally rich in fatty acids, vitamins A, B1, B6, B12, C, D and E, and lactic acid — a gentle alpha hydroxy acid that helps the skin cleanse and renew without aggressive scrubbing or stripping.

A few ingredients we use do particular work for reactive skin:

  • Natural Glycerin draws moisture into the skin and is widely used in sensitive-skin formulations for exactly this reason.
  • Shea Butter is non-comedogenic and naturally anti-inflammatory, calming redness without clogging pores.
  • Oat Oil contains avenanthramides, compounds specifically studied for reducing itching and redness in reactive skin.
  • Goats Milk is naturally pH-balanced, so it works with your skin's own barrier rather than against it.

Because our soaps are hypoallergenic and free from harsh foaming agents, they're formulated to cleanse gently rather than aggressively — which matters most for skin that reacts to the everyday.

Building a sensitive-skin-friendly routine

  • Go unscented first. If you're not sure what triggers your skin, start with our Simply range and introduce scent later, one product at a time.
  • Don't over-wash. Even gentle soap can over-strip skin if used too frequently on already-reactive areas — face and hands especially.
  • Moisturise while damp. Applying lotion within a few minutes of washing helps lock in the moisture your skin just took on.
  • Patch test anything new. Apply a small amount to the inside of your wrist or elbow and wait 24–48 hours before using a new product more widely.
  • Keep a simple diary. If reactions are unpredictable, noting new products, weather, or diet changes alongside flare-ups can help you and your GP spot a pattern.

When to see a professional

Sensitive skin is common and often manageable with gentler products and a simpler routine, but persistent redness, swelling, pain, or symptoms that interfere with daily life are worth discussing with a GP or dermatologist — particularly if you suspect an underlying condition like eczema, rosacea, or a specific allergy. Goat milk soap is intended to soothe and support sensitive skin as part of a gentle skincare routine, not to diagnose or treat any medical condition.

FAQ

Is goat milk soap suitable for very sensitive skin?

Many people with sensitive skin find goat milk soap comfortable to use because it's free from SLS and can be chosen completely unscented. As with any new product, we'd always recommend a patch test first.

What's the difference between sensitive skin and eczema?

Sensitive skin is a general term for skin that reacts more easily to products and environmental triggers. Eczema is a specific, diagnosable skin condition that often causes dryness, itching and inflamed patches. The two frequently overlap, and many people with eczema also describe their skin as sensitive. Read more in our Eczema glossary entry.

Should I use scented or unscented soap if I have sensitive skin?

Unscented is the safer starting point, since fragrance is one of the most common triggers for reactive skin. Our Unscented Skin Products range is designed for exactly this.

Can sensitive skin develop later in life, or is it something you're born with?

Both are possible. Some people have reactive skin from childhood, while others develop sensitivity later due to over-washing, harsh products, hormonal changes, sun damage, or another skin condition affecting the barrier.

Will goat milk soap cure my sensitive skin?

No soap can cure sensitive skin, as it isn't a medical condition with a cure — it's an ongoing tendency of the skin. What goat milk soap can do is offer a gentler, lower-irritant option as part of your daily routine, helping to soothe and support skin rather than aggravate it.

How do I know which product to start with?

If you're new to us, we'd suggest the Unscented Simply – Starter Skincare Collection — it lets you try soap, shampoo bar and lotion together without committing to full sizes across the range.
