What is Sodium Bicarbonate?
Sodium Bicarbonate, better known as bicarbonate of soda, is a naturally occurring mineral salt. In skincare and bath products it is valued for two things: it softens hard water, and when combined with a mild acid it produces the gentle fizz you get from a bath product.
On an ingredients list it appears simply as Sodium Bicarbonate.
Why we use Sodium Bicarbonate
Softens the bath water
Much of the UK has hard water. Sodium Bicarbonate helps to soften it, which makes the water feel gentler against the skin and helps the other ingredients in the blend perform better.
Creates a gentle fizz
When it meets water alongside a mild acid, Sodium Bicarbonate releases carbon dioxide. That is the familiar fizz of a bath product, and it helps disperse the salts and oils evenly through the water.
Mildly soothing
Bicarbonate baths have long been used to calm hot, itchy or irritated skin. It pairs well with colloidal oats and Epsom salt for a comforting soak.

Is Sodium Bicarbonate natural?
Yes. It occurs naturally as the mineral nahcolite and is also produced from soda ash. It is one of the most widely used and well understood ingredients in bath products.
Is it safe for sensitive skin?
In a bath it is heavily diluted and generally very well tolerated. If your skin is prone to eczema or is particularly reactive, it is always sensible to patch test first and keep baths short and warm rather than hot.
Will it dry my skin out?
On its own, frequent use of a strong bicarbonate solution can affect the skin's natural pH. In our blends it is balanced with nourishing oils, butters and goat milk to keep the skin comfortable.
Is it the same as washing soda?
No. Washing soda is sodium carbonate, which is far more alkaline and is not suitable for use on skin. Sodium Bicarbonate is much milder.
