What is Geranium Essential Oil?

Geranium essential oil is derived from the leaves and stems of the Pelargonium graveolens plant (commonly referred to as “geranium” or “rose geranium”). It has a sweet, rosy, slightly herbaceous aroma, making it a favourite both in perfumery and natural skincare.

Where does Geranium Essential Oil come from?

This oil is typically produced by steam distilling the foliage of the geranium plant, primarily cultivated in regions such as Reunion, Morocco, Egypt, and parts of Africa. Pelargonium graveolens is one of the main species used for its fragrance and therapeutic attributes.

What does Geranium Essential Oil do in skincare?
• Balances skin oil/“sebum regulation” — It can help manage both dry and oily complexions by supporting natural balance.
• Astringent & toning — Helps to tighten the look of the skin, giving a firmer, more refined complexion.
• Antibacterial & antimicrobial — Can help protect skin from certain microbes and support clearer skin.
• Anti-inflammatory & soothing — May calm irritation and redness, making it useful for sensitive or reactive skin.
• Promotes skin renewal & healing — Known to support skin’s regeneration, improve texture, and help with scar fading.
• Antioxidant & protective — Helps defend against environmental damage and supports skin health.

Why we use Geranium Essential Oil

We include Geranium essential oil in some of our goat milk soaps because its gentle yet effective balancing and toning properties complement goat milk’s creamy nature. Its floral scent adds elegance without overpowering, and its skin-loving benefits align well with our ethos of kind, nourishing skincare.

FAQs

Is Geranium Essential Oil safe for sensitive skin?

When used in safe, diluted concentrations (as is standard in soap formulations), it is generally well tolerated. But if your skin is very reactive, a patch test is always wise.

Does Geranium smell strongly “floral/rosy”?

Yes — it has a sweet, rose-like aroma with a clean, herbaceous undertone. Many people find it uplifting and soothing.

Can Geranium essential oil help with acne, eczema or scars?

While not a miracle cure, Geranium’s antibacterial, soothing, and regenerating properties suggest it may offer gentle support for acne-prone or irritated skin. It is also sometimes classed as a cicatrisant (helping with scar fading) in traditional or aromatherapeutic sources.

Are there any cautions or contraindications?

Yes — like all essential oils, Geranium must be used at appropriate dilution. Some sources caution that it may cause skin sensitisation in rare cases. Also, in some aromatherapy texts it’s advised that pregnant or breastfeeding individuals consult a healthcare provider before use.
